This is an original paint in mixed media employing the Star of David to represent the struggle between the temporal and the divine in every human soul. Life in this material world is an exile for the soul which, imprisoned in the body, is confronted by problems, anguish, base instincts and the necessities of physical survival. This state of being engenders a perpetual conflict: turn towards the material world or return to God. The eponymous conflict is represented in Hebrew at the apex of the star, where the central letter Aleph points towards the Divine. At the base is a literal rendition of a candle in the house of study where the candle echoes the motif of fire that suffuses the entire construction. The Alliance of Fire is the marriage of the Higher Fire that cleaves to its heavenly source with the earthly fires of passion and of survival. In the composition of opposing triangles presented in this work, the triangles themselves represent the elements in conflict. Attraction to the world is symbolized by the triangle which points below, while attraction to Heaven is symbolized by the triangle which points above. At the nexus of the Higher triangle is the Aleph to suggest the unity and immanence of the Divine, while the reconciliation of the conflict is found at the base of the lower triangle to suggest that it may be found deep inside of our essential selves, through the vehicles of meditation and prayer. |
